how to build your dream business without quitting your day job

Starting your own business doesn’t mean you have to risk everything, quit your job, or wait for the “perfect” moment. Many of my clients have found ways to build their businesses while keeping their day jobs, allowing them to create something they love, without all the pressure and uncertainty.

The good news? It is possible. I’ve worked with plenty of people who’ve been right where you are - juggling a 9-5 while building a business on the side.

Let me share a couple of stories about clients who found a way to build the business they wanted without sacrificing their steady income or burning out.

Meet Laura. When she came to me, she was frustrated in her corporate job but couldn’t imagine giving up her stable paycheck. She thought starting a business meant working 24/7 or taking a huge financial risk.

But instead of jumping in with both feet, we took a different approach. We started by carving out just a few small, intentional time blocks each week for her to work on her business. Then, we focused on the essentials - identifying the right business idea for her and building the foundation step by step. She didn’t need to do everything at once, and that was key.

One of the most important steps was helping Laura build her audience before she launched. By consistently sharing valuable content and connecting with the right people, she created a small community that was already engaged and interested in what she had to offer. So when it came time to launch, she had a group of people primed and ready for her offers, making it much easier to land her first clients.

As a result, Laura was able to launch her business without feeling overwhelmed, and she hit the ground running with a supportive community behind her - all while keeping her 9-5 job.

Then there's James. Before we worked together, he had been dreaming of starting his own consultancy for years but kept putting it off, thinking he had to wait until he had more time.

The breakthrough came when we reframed how he thought about “starting.” Instead of waiting for the perfect moment, I showed him how to break things down into bite-sized steps. We began with him taking on a couple of small consulting projects in his spare time, testing his ideas and getting feedback while keeping his paycheck steady.

Once he realized he could start small, he began taking on projects in his spare time, validating his ideas while still bringing in his regular paycheck. Now that he's had several beta clients under his belt, he’s at the point where he’s confidently planning his transition out of the 9-to-5 grind!

The truth is, every month you wait is another month you could be using to build your own version of freedom. What could you achieve in the next six months if you started laying the groundwork today?

If you’re ready to start building your business without sacrificing your current stability, I’d love to help. I’m looking to work with a handful of people in my coaching program - people who want to launch a business that aligns with their skills and passions while still working their 9-5.

Here’s what I’m looking for:

  • You want to leave your 9-5 job and create a service-based business that lets you engage with soul-fulfilling and meaningful work.
  • You want to repurpose your existing skills and experience while you launch that business.
  • You have 5-10 years of experience in your career, and you're already making at least $50k/year.
  • You’re committed to your dreams and ready to do the work.
  • You have a coachable spirit and are open to expanding your mindset.

If that’s you, hit reply to this, and let me know a little about where you’re at with your business.

My monthly newsletter sent at the end of every month, to stay connected and inspire reflection for creating meaningful work and a purpose-driven business. Hi Reader, I've just landed back in Bali after spending the entire month of February on a workcation in Vietnam, and wow - what a month it's been! Switching up my usual surroundings and working from cafes in Hanoi and Saigon has been exactly the kind of refresh I needed. One of the month's highlights was surprising my partner for his...

Hi friends, In 2024, I chose a different path while the online business world kept shouting "scale bigger!". I embraced doing less but better. I celebrated "enough" over endless growth. And you know what? The results were anything but small. This year, I supported dozens of accomplished professionals who traded burnout for freedom by building tiny-but-mighty businesses. I saw corporate escapees find more joy (and often more profit!) by choosing simplicity over complexity. And personally? I...

The business world bombards us with constant pressure to think bigger, move faster, scale higher - as if building an empire is the only path to success. But who decided that was the only way? Can I share something vulnerable with you? In 2015, I had my highest revenue year ever in my business. Sounds great, right? But the truth? I was burned out, exhausted, and questioning everything. Sure, I looked successful on paper, but I felt empty inside. The business had grown, the team was bigger, but...
